Watch: Thomas Leuluai sticks up for embattled Kiwis coach David Kidwell: 'The passion shows in his coaching'

October 16, 2017

The Kiwis utility is standing by the under-fire Kidwell ahead of the World Cup.

Kiwis utility Thomas Leuluai has stuck up for coach David Kidwell, in the wake of criticism aimed at New Zealand's league coach.

Since taking over the Kiwis in September last year, Kidwell's record in charge of New Zealand is nothing short of disastrous, with just one win from six matches, as well as seeing star player Jason Taumalolo change his allegiance to Tonga ahead of this year's World Cup.

However, former teammate Leuluai is backing Kidwell to turn things around with the Kiwis.

Speaking to 1 NEWS at the launch of the Kiwis' World Cup playing jersey in Auckland today, Leuluai defended Kidwell, saying that the players are firmly behind the coach.

"I was lucky enough to play alongside Kiddy (Kidwell) when I first came through. The passion he played in the jersey is the same sort of passion he shows in his coaching," he said.

"He has had a tough run, and New Zealand rugby league probably has too. I went to training today... and you can tell that there's a little bit of desire there."

Thomas Leuluai modelled the new kit that New Zealand will wear in the tournament.

The Kiwis coach is still upbeat about his side's chances of taking out the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The former boxer and NRL player has joined the team in Tonga with his son Will named to captain the side.
