Watch: 'An individual who didn't want to represent this club' - Warriors boss doesn't hold back on Johnson's exit

November 28, 2018

Cameron George said the club comes first, no matter the player.

Warriors chief executive Cameron George was blunt on how the club is viewing the departure of star half and fan favourite Shaun Johnson - the club comes first.

George announced today Johnson was a free agent effective immediately after being released from the final year of his contract following a meeting between the 28-year-old and the club yesterday.

"I saw evidence yesterday in our meeting of an individual who didn't want to represent this club in 2019 and asked accordingly," he said.

"Based on that, we're not jeoperdising what we've got in place here."

It backs up a scathing release the club sent out to fans with confirmation of Johnson's departure this morning.

"On the basis of what Shaun told us, we are not going to compromise our culture on and off the field with people who do not wish to represent our club, members and fans in the way we expect.

"Everything we do is about the club being first and what’s best for our future, our development and ultimately our results."

George made sure to thank Johnson for his contribution to the club though, which included 162 games in seven seasons and a club-record 917 points.

"We wish him all the best for the future wherever that may be and we'll always have fond memories of him as a great player at this club, but it's business and it's club first."

Goerge said no replacements had been found yet but the club is looking.

"We've got a very good plan for our future that we're going to execute and we want to win this NRL competition.

"Players can help us get there, some players can get us there and that's what we're always looking to do is getting the best squad we can under the salary cap."
