Shaun Johnson 'the ultimate professional' says halves partner Benji Marshall

June 23, 2019

The Kiwis' five-eighth shone in last night’s win over Tonga.

Kiwis five-eighth Shaun Johnson's display in last night's 34-14 win over Mate Ma'a Tonga earned special praise from halves partner and roomate Benji Marshall.

Returning to Mt Smart for the first time since leaving the Warriors, Johnson shone for the Kiwis - scoring twice and combining well with Marshall as New Zealand strolled to a memorable win over Tonga.

Speaking to media today, Marshall praised Johnson's display, arguably his best in a Kiwis jersey.

"Shaun's a very special player, last night he showed those reasons why," Marshall began.

"His strength - I thought - since he was a young fella is his running game. Those two opportunities he took to essentially put us on top with his running game were outstanding.

"It was a privilege for me. All I had to do was put him in positions where he could look dangerous. My job was easy, he did the rest.

"I roomed with him all week, and what I will say about Shaun is that he's the ultimate professional - on and off the field. You can have as much talent you want, but if you add those little hard work things and attitude, you can end up in Shaun's position.

"I'm just happy to see him going great the way he is."
