Shaun Johnson demands release from Warriors contract - report

November 27, 2018

The star halfback can negotiate with other NRL clubs from November 1.

Shaun Johnson's contract fallout with the Warriors appears to have taken a dramatic turn, with the star halfback requesting a release from the club, the NZ Herald reports.

Johnson, 28, comes off contract at the end of the 2019 season, with the Warriors telling the star halfback he's free to look for another club rather than re-sign.

The star halfback says the next period of time off will allow him to sort his future, saying the Warriors will always be a club he’ll love regardless of whether he stays or not.

According a report from the NZ Herald this afternoon, Johnson has met with CEO Cameron George and coach Stephen Kearney, requesting a release from the final year of his contract to pursue a move to Australia.

However, it is understood that the Warriors have rejected Johnson's request, eager to see the halfback and the club's all time leading points scorer remain at the club for the remainder of his current deal.

Johnson yesterday took to Facebook to vent his frustrations at negotiations over a new contract.
