Māori All Star Dane Gagai recalls teaching son Ka Mate, eager to teach him new haka

February 12, 2019

The Maroons star said his son copied the Toa Samoa's Siva Tau while he played for the Kangaroos in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Māori All Stars winger Dane Gagai says he is still learning his side's haka for their upcoming fixture against the Indigenous All Stars on Friday in Melbourne.

Gagai qualifies to play for both sides, with his dad being Australian indigenous and his mother being of Māori descent.

It will be Gagai's first time donning on the jersey for the Māori side, with the Maroons winger saying he can't wait to teach his son the haka.

"I'm very excited to learn it and get the best I can at it because I’ve obviously got a little one now and to be able to teach him will be awesome," said Gagai.

The 28-year-old recalls his son copying Toa Samoa's Siva Tau while he played for the Kangaroos in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

"It was actually when I played in the World Cup [2017] against Samoa and he seen the Samoan boys doing their haka [siva tau] and he started copying them.

"So once I seen that I was like 'ok' [and] taught him Ka Mate and now we are learning a completely new one.

"Definitely want to be able to teach him this one."

Gagai revealed to media today that he watched YouTube clips of the All Blacks and other people performing the haka.

"He just gets up there and slaps his legs and screams around the house."
