Kiwis coach assures fans he's committed to NZ despite Tigers job: 'I can do both'

February 25, 2019

Michael Maguire said it's more important to build consistency in the squad than a one-off 26-24 win.

Michael Maguire is playing down any fears that the Kiwis will suffer as a result of his new job as head coach of the Wests Tigers, confident he can balance his two roles.

Appointed as the new Kiwis coach following the farcical 2017 Rugby League World Cup, Maguire has quickly begun to endear himself to New Zealand supporters, most notably through a 26-24 victory over Australia in October last year.

However, the 45-year old will spend 2019 balancing his international commitments, taking on a full time job as coach of the Wests Tigers - taking the reigns from Penrith bound Ivan Cleary.

Speaking to the NRL's official website though, Maguire is confident that the Tigers job won't stop him performing at his best with the New Zealand side.

"I can do both [jobs] definitely," he said.

"The Kiwis are a great group of men and they are building something as we move forward."

Maguire also says that the quality of coaching at the Tigers will hold over during his international commitments.

"There is a terrific group of support staff, performance guys and coaches at the club, which allows me to go and do the Kiwis."
