Kalyn Ponga enjoying Māori environment, still learning waiata and getting used to way teammates speak

February 12, 2019

The 20-year-old is set to start in the halves for the Māori All Stars against the Indigenous All Stars in Melbourne on Friday.

NRL star Kalyn Ponga is enjoying his time in the Māori All Stars environment and says he is soaking up as much as he can.

Ponga, 20, said his teammates have been welcoming and admitted the language is bit different to what he is used to being brought up in Australia.

"The language, the way the boys speak. You forget that being over here [in Australia]," said Ponga.

The Newcastle Knights star says learning more about his heritage has been a unique experience and says he's still working on his vocals.

"Trying [to sing], mine is no good [voice]. I'm still trying to learn some of the songs but we are lucky we had some girls on the bus for us, because they have some mad voices. But I have been trying my best."

The Maori All Stars men's and women's teams take on the Indigenous All Stars sides at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Friday.
