'It's all about reaching our potential' – Tonga coach insists island trip not a holiday

October 14, 2017

Kristian Woolf says his side is focused in preparation for the Rugby League World Cup.

Tonga rugby league coach Kristian Woolf has said that his side are taking their preparation for the upcoming World Cup seriously, as they begin to wrap up their trip to the Pacific.

Woolf and his side are currently in Tonga, both as team building and as a chance for the squad to meet their fans before the tournament begins later this month, although the coach is adamant that the squad are not simply there for a holiday.

Speaking to 1 NEWS, Woolf says that his side's training sessions so far bode well for Tonga's chances at the World Cup.

"We've had two good sessions here so far on the field," he said.

"We've also had an indoor session as well, with a little bit of wrestling and a bit of weights and that kind of thing."

"The blokes have really ripped in, and bought in to what we want to do here - it's all about reaching our potential as a team."

Woolf also says that the celebration of his side by the locals in Tonga haven't served as a distraction.

"While the community's been partying, we certainly haven't."

The Tonga centre is proving a star turn with a microphone in hand.

The star forward rates his side a chance to have an impact at this year's tournament.

"We've been working hard, but at the same time it's been great to have the celebrations around us like we have had."
