'I'm so sorry we couldn't deliver' - Shaun Johnson apologises to Kiwis fans after World Cup humiliation

November 21, 2017

The Kiwis half was in shock after his side were unable to overcome Fiji in Wellington.

Kiwis halfback Shaun Johnson has apologised to New Zealand rugby league fans after his emotional outburst following his side's 4-2 World Cup defeat to Fiji last week.

Following the shock loss at Wellington's Westpac Stadium that saw New Zealand dumped out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stage for the very first time, Johnson implied  that the Kiwis did not receive the support they deserved from the community, with his suggestion backed up by Kiwis captain Adam Blair.

Taking to Facebook this afternoon however, Johnson backtracked on his post-match comments, saying that the team are soley responsible for their poor showing.

"There's no one to blame for how things played out during this world cup other than ourselves," Johnson wrote.

"We own that and have to live with the disappointment and embarrassment of being part of the worst kiwis team in RLWC history for the rest of our lives."

The likes of Shaun Johnson and Adam Blair pointed fingers at the fans after their World Cup exit.

The halfback apologised to the fans, thanking them for their support during the disastrous World Cup campaign.

"I want to say thank you to those of you that came out and said hello on our fan days, the ones who brought tickets to come support us, those who sent messages of support and those who yell out whilst driving past or stop when walking by to let me know they still believe in us and me."

"I'm not looking for sympathy nor will I sugar coat anything but the last few days have been the toughest of my career. Really appreciate the love and I'm so sorry we couldn't deliver what you believed we could."

Finally, Johnson delivered a message to the Fijian and Tongan teams ahead of their respective semi-finals against Australia and England this week.

"Finally all best to our Island brothers this weekend, would love to see you both meet in the final! VANAKA & OFA ATU."
