Outgoing Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson thanks fans for support - 'Really looking forward to what's next!'

November 28, 2018

Cameron George said the club comes first, no matter the player.

Outgoing Warriors star halfback Shaun Johnson has taken to social media to thank his Warriors teammates, friends and diehard fans for their support after the New Zealand NRL club announced his official release from the final year of his contract earlier today.

Warriors' CEO Cameron George held a press conference earlier this morning announcing that Johnson is effective immediately a free agent.

Yesterday Johnson and his agent had a meeting with George and Warriors coach Stephen Kearney which ultimately resulted in Johnson parting ways with the club.

Johnson wrote to his followers on Instagram today that he is still coming to grips with leaving the Warriors.

"To think my time at Mt Smart playing for my hometown team has officially come to an end is one of mixed emotions," Johnson wrote on social media.

"Thank you to the boys and everyone that's been involved with the Warriors over the past eight years.

"I really am grateful and will never lose sight of how different my life could be if it wasn't for all of you.

"So much has been said publicly over the past month which hasn't been ideal but is what it is."

Johnson said he holds no grudges from anyone at the New Zealand NRL club and wishes them all the best for the future.

"I've got nothing bad to say about anyone involved with the club, sometimes things just don't work out and I know they will be sweet and take things to where we all want them to be.

"Those of you that have followed my journey probably still can’t believe this is actually happening. I just want to let you know that I'm ok and really looking forward to what's next!

"I get to go somewhere fresh and take my game to a new level… how good!"

The Warriors announced today that Johnson has been released from the final year of his contract.

Johnson played 162 NRL games for the Warriors, helping the side reach the grand final in 2011 against Manly Sea Eagles.

"Thank you for believing and keeping me strong, we all know it hasn't been a smooth ride but without your support I wouldn't be who I am.

"I've loved entertaining, chatting and getting photos with you and if ya stay with me I'll continue to do so 😏.

"Stay happy fam and thanks for all the positive messages, I'll let ya know what's next once it's all confirmed.

"No hate, all love as always."

Reports have come out of Australia earlier this afternoon that Johnson is set to sign a short-term deal with Cronulla Sharks.
