'He gets the best out of all of us' – Warriors firmly behind Stephen Kearney, says skipper

February 26, 2019

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck spoke after Kearny's new contract was announced this morning.

Warriors captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck hailed the new deal for coach Stephen Kearney, who today re-signed with the club through to the end of 2022.

With his new deal, 44-year old Kearney will become the Warriors' equal-longest serving coach, tied with Ivan Cleary, with his captain speaking of what his signature means to the squad as a whole.

Tuivasa-Sheck has shown career best form for the Warriors under Kearney, resulting in becoming the first player in the club's history to win the coveted Dally M Medal in 2018.

Speaking to media today, Tuivasa-Sheck spoke about Kearney's impact on the Warriors' squad.

"The connection he has with the players, that's what really drives the boys," he began.

"It was great news when we heard about coach re-signing and staying on for much longer. It gives the boys clarity.

"We've already got good connections with him. He's here for a long time, the boys can continue to plan their journey, and head to the right direction.

"The way that he's pushing the boys on and off the field is one of the best parts of it."

Tuivasa-Sheck also hailed Kearney's impact in changing the culture within the Warriors' squad, having last season taken the club to the NRL finals for the first time since 2011.

"I wanted to stay back and see a great change in the club.

"That's what he's doing. Since he's been here [we've] been heading in the right direction.

"I'm looking forward to what's happening this year, and what's to come.

"He gets the best out of all of us, [we're] real pleased."

The Warriors will have their final pre-season trial against the Wests Tigers in Whangarei this weekend, before their NRL season opens against the Bulldogs on March 16.
