'He was doing his pukanas' – Benji Marshall honoured to lead haka in front of his son

June 23, 2019

Last night saw Marshall play for his country for the first time since son Fox was born last year.

Kiwis halfback Benji Marshall has spoken about his personal highlight from last night's 34-14 win over Mate Ma'a Tonga at Mt Smart Stadium - performing the haka for the first time in front of his son Fox.

Playing for the Kiwis for the first time since 2012, last night saw Marshall back in the Test arena, watched on by his son Fox for the very first time.

What's more, the 34-year old got to lead the haka as New Zealand outclassed Tonga in front of their home fans.

Speaking to media today, Marshall opened up about his pride in representing his heritage in front of his son.

"My wife took some videos of him watching the haka on the big screen," Marshall said.

"He was doing his pukanas, and she said he had the best time ever.

"For me, that's a big part of why I play now, a big part of my motivation.

"To have him and my wife here is something special. It definitely added to the occasion for me. Most importantly, we got the result.

"All of that added together, it's been the perfect week for me."
