'I found out through social media' - Kiwis teammate blindsided by Taumalolo Tonga defection

October 17, 2017

Te Maire Martin was stunned at his Cowboys compatriots World Cup switch.

Kiwis five-eighth Te Maire Martin has opened up about hearing of international and club teammate Jason Taumalolo's decision to represent Tonga instead of New Zealand at this year's World Cup.

Taumalolo stunned the rugby league community with his decision to play for Tonga ahead of the Kiwis, even leaving his teammates at the North Queensland Cowboys in the dark.

"I found out through social media, probably like everyone else," Martin told media.

"It was a bit of a shock for me."

Martin went on to wish Taumalolo luck, holding no ill-will towards the rampaging forward for his decision.

"He made up his mind, thought that's what's best for him - so full credit to him, good luck."

Martin also laughed off the possibility of coming up against Taumalolo when the Kiwis face Tonga in Hamilton on November 11.

"As much as you'd like Jase to be in your team - I've seen how much damage he can do - I enjoyed being in his team so it'll be different running against him."
