'Everyone knows how much that jersey means' – Benji Marshall's Kiwis influence revealed by teammate

June 28, 2019

Benji Marshall's presence in the Kiwis last week proved to be a lift for the entire squad, five-eighth Shaun Johnson says.

Returning to the Kiwis for the first time since 2012, Marshall's emotion was clear for all to see - tearing up during the New Zealand national anthem before last week's clash with Mate Ma'a Tonga.

Speaking to media today Marshall's halves partner Shaun Johnson revealed that Marshall's passion was an inspiration for both himself, and the rest of the Kiwis' squad.

"After the game, he came up to me and was like 'bro, I lost it eh,' Johnson said.

"It wasn't until I saw the footage, how raw it was - I watched it and I sort of felt it.

"Everyone knows his story, everyone knows how much that jersey means to him.

"To be able to share that with him, be a part of that week with him - I got to room with him for the whole week, exchanging stories, talking about footy, our careers - it was an experience for myself that I won't forget anytime soon.

"Everyone's talking about how much of a buzz it was for Benji to be back in the camp, but for all of us round him, he probably doesn't understand how much of an impact that had on us."
