Veteran Kiwi golfer Mark Brown hits sub-60 round for second time in his career

Brown leads the Tauranga Open after blitzing the course in an 11-under round of 59.

Four years ago, Mark Brown tore apart the Tauranga golf club – he did it again yesterday.

Though he failed an agonisingly close putt to score 58, after an incredible nine birdies and an eagle Brown had his second 59 on the Charles Tour.

"It feels amazing, you know - this place is pretty special to me," he said.

"Played well over the years and always nice to do that in front of the members and the support."

The magical number looked likely through just seven holes when Brown was five-under with the easier nine still to come.

His short game on song and from there he continued his stunning play.

The first six holes of his back nine netted five birdies, while a difficult chip in at his penultimate hole kept the dream alive.

He shot the same score at the course in 2014 - yesterday's round coming after an opening day of even par 70.

"I wish you could bottle that," he said.

"Yesterday was pretty average. Everything was pretty poor really so you know coming out this morning I was pretty determined to try and get back in this tournament somehow."

The historic round gives him a two shot lead as he chases his fifth Tauranga Open title in the last six years.
