When next week's Asia Pacific Amateur Championship tees off at the Royal Wellington Golf Course, eyes won't just be fixed on the action on the course.

Greensman John Spraggs has taken charge of preparing for the grounds for the event, fresh from a stint at Augusta's Masters earlier this year - where he oversaw the 16th hole - and that's left him with high standards.

"There was not a blade of grass out of place," Spraggs told 1 NEWS.

"A pine needle dropped anywhere on the golf course and it was picked up within seconds."

The course's Masters connection doesn't stop there however, with the winner gaining entry to next year's tournament, along with the Open Championship.

"In the scale of things, it's a big deal," NZ Golf chief executive Dean Murphy said.

Spraggs though, is just hoping that his course comes up trumps as soon as play gets underway.

Asked if there were any nerves, the greensman simply replied:

"Always."
