The Young Football Ferns have downed Canada 2-1 at the Under17 Football World Cup in Uruguay, taking the third place play-off for the best finish by a New Zealand side at a global tournament.
Coming into the match having been defeated 2-0 by Spain in the semi-final, Grace Wisnewski opened the scoring after just 16 seconds, catching the Canadian defence out having tried to play out from the back.
Wisnewski would have her second just 10 minutes later, rifling a powerful shot past the Canadian keeper, sending the Young Football Ferns into the break 2-0 up.
To their credit, Canada didn't go away in the second half, grabbing a goal back in the second half, as Lara Kazandjian's long range effort left Young Ferns keeper Anna Leat stranded.
In a frantic end to the second half, New Zealand's defence held firm, despite a sustained attacking barrage from Canada, sealing the victory to take the bronze medal.
