Kelli Brown has gotten the Football Ferns Under 17s' World Cup campaign in Uruguay off to the perfect start, with a sensational strike from deep lifting New Zealand to a 1-0 win over Finland.
Momentum in the game had favoured Finland until the 42nd minute when Brown lofted a ball from 25m out towards the goal.
Finnish goalkeeper Anna Koivunen tried her best to reach the ball as it floated into the top right corner but she couldn't get high enough, handing the Kiwis the lead as they surrounded Brown in excited celebrations.
From there, the Football Ferns U17s held on grimly for a victory that takes them to the top of Group A, ahead of Ghana, hosts Uruguay and Finland.
They next play on Saturday at 11am NZT against Uruguay.
