Burnley striker Wood came into camp carrying a hamstring injury, which limited him to 20 minutes on the pitch in the first leg in Wellington, and 45 today in Lima.

His impact was instant, causing problems for the Peruvian defence, and Hudson was left rueing what might have been.

"When we came into this week without Chris Wood, without Storm Roux, we obviously lost Tommy Smith halfway through.

Chris Chang was draped with a Peru flag and given a kiss by the partying Peruvians.

"We rely so much on some our bigger players and Woodsy is one of them.

"Coming into this window knowing he wasn’t going to start, really, the first game, and to know we had to manage minutes in the second game, I’m proud, I really am.

"I say I’m proud of the team – everyone should be proud of these players, because what they’ve done is incredible."

These fans love New Zealand, but had to support their homeland.
