Phoenix wonderkid staying grounded after latest accolade: 'It's not possible without my teammates'

Sarpreet Singh has been included in the A-League's young player of the year nominees.

Wellington Phoenix youngster Sarpreet Singh is keeping his feet on the ground, nominated as the A-League's young player of the year after a breakthrough season.

Singh, 19, has become an integral member of the Phoenix side this season under Mark Rudan, with two goals and four assists to his name so far.

Addressing media at Westpac Stadium this morning, though, Singh was quick to deflect any personal praise in the direction of his teammates.

"I'm very pleased to be nominated for this award," Singh began.

"It does mean a lot to me and my family. It's not possible without my teammates. Everything they've done for me this season has been great. And also the coaching staff for believing in me and giving me this opportunity."

Meanwhile, Singh's captain Andrew Durante heaped praise on the young midfielder's success, crediting the 19-year old as the side have equalled a club record seven consecutive matches unbeaten.

"He's been great. He's been instrumental in all the good things that we've done," Durante said.

"He's only a young kid, but he's got a lot of potential. There's still a lot of progress in him, a lot of improvement.

"But for a kid so young, to be able to grab the neck by the scruff of the neck sometimes, to be able to create opportunities for the front two or three, it's exciting.

"Hopefully he continues that, and if he does he's going to have a bright future."
