'It's not about me' - Mark Rudan puts team first amid speculation he'll leave Phoenix

March 29, 2019

Filip Kurto kept his cards close to his chest over his coach's future.

Phoenix manager Mark Rudan has given another hint that he could prematurely end his stint in Wellington, refusing to comment on his commitment to the A-League side.

Having taken the Phoenix from the lower depths of the A-League to currently occupying fourth place, 43-year old Rudan is reportedly catching the eye of a number of clubs in Australia, with the likes of Adelaide United and the new Western United expansion side mooted as possible destinations.

Rudan's future with the Phoenix has already been cast into doubt, with former club stalwart Paul Ifill among those to predict his departure.

Speaking to Stuff, Rudan says that his focus is solely on the Phoenix's clash with the Newcastle Jets this weekend, and not where his future lies.

Rudan said when he came into the set-up, he saw a "broken" team on and off the park.

"I'm not going to be talking about myself. It's not about me," Rudan said.

It's about Newcastle Jets. We play Newcastle Jets tomorrow in what is a massive game for us. We are fourth at the moment and we are solely focused on picking up three points and that's it.

"It will be that way until the end of the season so you won't be getting anything else from me in regards to my future. If you want to speak to players it's up to them but the club is the most important thing for me and my players at the moment."

The Phoenix face the Jets in Wellington tomorrow night, closing in on a first A-League finals appearance since 2015.
