'It's going to be down to the whole country' – All Whites coach issues rallying cry to fans ahead of Peru clash

October 15, 2017

New Zealand face the South Americans in Wellington on November 11.

All Whites coach Anthony Hudson is urging New Zealand fans to get behind their side when they take to the field against Peru in the first leg of their intercontinental World Cup playoff in November.

With the All Whites to play the first leg of the tie at Wellington's Westpac Stadium on November 11, a good result is crucial to set up the second leg in Lima on November 16 - with the winner advancing to next year's World Cup in Russia.

Speaking to media yesterday, Hudson called on the All Whites' fans to help create an atmosphere to see the team get a good result in the first leg, comparing it to the 2009 clash with Bahrain to seal a spot in the South Africa World Cup in 2010.

"We need the whole stadium behind the team, we need a great atmosphere," Hudson said.

"We know we've got that in the past, we know when the fans get behind the team, the stadium's packed, it's a great atmosphere."

Anthony Hudson spoke to 1NEWS after details for his side's clash with Peru were finalised.

Hudson also insists that the New Zealand public need to get behind the team, making the prospect of travelling to Wellington a daunting one for their Peruvian opponents.

"Over these two games, it's not just going to be down to these 11 players on the pitch - it's going to be down to the whole country."

"We do - more than any other team - need everyone pushing the team, fighting with the team, encouraging the team and putting pressure on the opposition."
