'He's been a shining light' – Phoenix boss heralds triple centurion Andrew Durante

January 11, 2019

Durante will notch his 300th A-League game against the Mariners tomorrow.

Wellington Phoenix captain Andrew Durante is playing down the achievement of notching his 300th A-League appearance, instead looking forward to his club's clash with the Central Coast Mariners tomorrow night.

Durante, 36, arrived at the Phoenix from Newcastle Jets in 2008, going on to play 259 times for the Wellington side, and will tomorrow become the first player to reach 300 games.

What's more, with the Phoenix unbeaten in their last seven matches, avoiding defeat tomorrow night will see the side register a new record unbeaten run.

Speaking to media today though, Durante said that any acknowledgement of personal milestones can wait until after facing the Mariners.

"Like all milestones, you're pretty proud of them. But like I always say at every milestone, the most important thing is the team and winning this game," Durante said.

"We've been on such a good run of form, I want to keep it going."

Manager Mark Rudan though, was more complimentary of Durante's achievements, hailing the captain and defender's impact on the side, and the A-League as a whole.

"He deserves all the accolades, he's been absolutely superb this season," Rudan said.

"He's been a shining light this season.

"I've known Dura for a long time. He's been the person I knew he was going to be.

"Just reward for a fantastic individual, one of the best leaders this competition's seen."
