Football giant Adebayo Akinfenwa gives colourful interview after club promoted

July 14, 2020

If anyone wanted to know how much Wycombe's promotion to the EFL Championship this morning meant to players, look no further than veteran and football giant Adebayo Akinfenwa.

The Wycombe Wanderers earned their place in next season's Championship - the second highest league in English football directly under the Premier League - after beating Oxford 2-1 in this morning's League One playoffs final at Wembley.

Shortly after the match, Akinfenwa was interviewed about the result and promotion and wasn't afraid to show his jubilation.

"Tell me what we did because I don't know what we just did," he said to the interviewer.

When the reporter told him he'd earned a spot in the Championship, he repeated the question with even more energy.

The 38-year-old, who critics have said is "too big" to play football due to his heavy build, has been in a similar situation before, although the sour aftermath of that situation made today's moment that much sweeter.

In 2016, Akinfenwa helped AFC Wimbledon to a promotion in the League Two playoff final but moments after was released from his contract, notably saying in his post-match interview, "I think I'm technically unemployed, so any managers hit me up on the WhatsApp and get me a job."

He was soon signed by Wycombe and after almost four years and over 150 appearances, he's finally back in the winner's circle.

"Four years ago I stood in front of you and I was technically unemployed," he said.

"Four years I was here and I was unemployed but let me tell you - the only person that can hit me up on WhatsApp this time is [Premier League-winning manager Jurgen] Klopp so we can celebrate together!"

Wycombe join Rotherham and Coventry as the teams promoted from this season's League One.
