Football Ferns draw tough pool for women's World Cup

December 10, 2018

The Football Ferns have learned who their pool play opponents will be at next year's World Cup having been drawn in a tough group for the tournament in France.

The Kiwi side were selected alongside Canada, Netherlands and Cameroon in Group E during yesterday's draw in Paris.

Both Canada and Netherlands rank in the top 10 nations in the world in women's football with Canada fifth and Netherlands seventh.

Cameroon rank 46th.

The Football Ferns, ranked 19th, have some familiarity with all three rivals in their pool having played both Canada and Netherlands at the Last World Cup. They also played Cameroon at the 2012 London Olympics.

The senior team is chasing their first win at a World Cup as well as a place in the knockout stages for the first time.

They'll be able to take inspiration from the Young Football Ferns after they finished third at the U17s World Cup in Uruguay last week.

The Football Ferns first match will be against the Netherlands on June 12 next year.
