'I feel at home' - Steven Taylor extends deal with Wellington Phoenix

February 18, 2019

The Wellington Phoenix have been boosted by the re-signing of defender Steven Taylor's contract, with the former Newcastle United star's current deal extended through to the end of the 2019/20 season.

Taylor, 33, joined the Phoenix at the start of the current campaign, starting in 18 of 19 A-League matches this season, missing just one through illness.

The veteran centre back's influence has been clear for fans to see, with the Phoenix sitting sixth on the A-League ladder on goal difference, in the mix to reach the play-offs for the first time since 2015.

"I feel at home in Wellington and I'm playing well so I'm very happy to be signing an extension here," said Taylor.

"The fans have been fantastic the whole season in getting behind us and I feel we're only going to get stronger."

Taylor also says that the chance to continue with Phoenix boss Mark Rudan was a major factor in his decision.

"Mark Rudan was a big reason behind my extension and the belief he has shown in me has been fantastic," he said. "The team are all working towards a bigger goal and that is to win and bring this club back to where it belongs."

Taylor joins the likes of goalkeeper Filip Kurto and youngsters Liberato Cacace and Sarpreet Singh, all contracted with the Phoenix for next season.
