Coach Mark Rudan's exit from Wellington Phoenix confirmed

Football's worst kept secret is officially out - coach Mark Rudan is ditching the Wellington Phoenix at the end of the season.

The Wellington A-League club confirmed the news on its website today.

"This has been one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make in my career. I came here wanting a project I could sink my teeth into and really make a difference to our sport," Rudan said.

"I’ve said it before, this football club is special. There are wonderful people here that make this club what it is. The people of Wellington and New Zealand have truly embraced me. I thank all the supporters, corporate partners and the entire football club on having such great belief in me."

Australian Rudan has reinvigorated the struggling club, whose future in the A-League is at risk, and they sit fifth on the ladder and are guaranteed a first playoff place since 2015.

There has been months of speculation regarding Rudan's future.

He has spoken out about his belief they are showing a lack of ambition.

Rudan also found living away from his family a struggle.
