Chatham Cup 2019: Melville United reach final after 16-year absence

September 7, 2019

The Hamilton side have a chance to lift NZ football's biggest prize tomorrow.

For nearly a century, the Chatham Cup has been the most cherished prize in New Zealand Football, modelled on the English FA Cup and seeing clubs from all over the country compete for the trophy.

To mark this year's competition 1 NEWS decided to pick a random game in the preliminary round.

We'd follow the winner on to the next round and the winner of that match to the following round, until we eventually ended up with one of the teams to contest this weekend's final.

As Melville United booked a tie against Waitakere City,  the Hamilton side proved too strong to take a 3-1 win, setting up a quarter-final against Christchurch United.

A hat-trick from striker Mark Evans enough to keep Melville's dream alive, winning 4-0 before turning their attention to a semi-final showdown against Bay Olympic away from home.

Without home field advantage, Melville were made to work, before ending their 16-year final drought, a 2-0 victory putting them through to tomorrow's final.

They'll be up against Napier City, out to claim the Chatham Cup for the first time since 1962 tomorrow afternoon.
