Alex Rufer unfazed by talk of Phoenix captaincy: 'I just wanna help the team'

The midfielder could take the armband for a new-look Nix this season.

Wellington Phoenix midfielder Alex Rufer says he's unconcerned by talk of taking on the club captaincy, as the 2019/20 A-League season approaches.

With a number of senior players having left the Phoenix after last season, Rufer now finds himself as one of the more settled members of the side, quickly adapting to life under new manager Ufuk Talay.

With former skipper Andrew Durante ending his tenure with the Phoenix at the end of last season, Rufer finds himself in the mix to take over a leadership role, although the 23-year old isn't letting any aspirations affect his current pre-season training.

"We haven't decided on a captain just yet, but I'm just going to do what I do every day," he said.

"Work hard, and do my best to help the young ones, and even help some of the older boys if need be.

"But also, I've got that attitude and that mentality that I want to learn every day. If I'm a captain, if I'm not, I just want to help the team as best as possible."
