23-man All Whites squad heading to Intercontinental Cup without majority of stars

New head coach Fritz Schmid has named one of the most inexperienced teams in NZ football history.

The All Whites have named what's arguably their most inexperienced side in New Zealand football history.

The 23-man squad is set to take on hosts India, Kenya and Taiwan in next week's Intercontinental Cup, but they're doing it without any of their big stars.

The squad is almost unrecognisable, with less than 100 caps on their side.

But new head coach Fritz Schmid says they're not feeling the pressure.

"Pressure? Pressure you have when you don't know what you're doing!"

Schmid had practically no choice with his selections though with all the big stars unavailable - most due to club commitments.

Chris Wood is taking a well-deserved break after a strong season with Burnley while Winston Reid and Ryan Thomas are injured, making it virtually a development side.

Midfielder Tim Payne says he sort of likes the environment though.

"We're pretty use to the underdog tag as New Zelaanders and Kiwis so I’m happy with it."

Payne is the most experienced player on the team with just 15 caps to his name - not only that, he's also the top goal scorer.

The youthful All Whites squad has only got a scoring tally of three between them with Payne contributing two of those.

The lack of experience in the goalkeeping situation is just as glaring.

Three keepers have been named but between them, there’s only one cap!

One of the goalies, Max Crocombe, says there’s only one way to get experienced players.

"It is a younger side than what we have got but hopefully at the end of this tour there'll be players with three potentially four extra caps than what we had going into it."
