Williamson finds form in IPL while Ish Sodhi takes three wickets in loss

May 5, 2019

There was good news for the Black Caps’ World Cup hopes overnight with Kane Williamson finding form in the IPL while Ish Sodhi was among the wickets for the Rajasthan Royals in an earlier game.

Neither Williamson’s 70 off 43 nor Sodhi’s three for 26 were enough to secure victories for Sunrisers Hyderabad or Rajasthan Royals respectively but their performances will be welcomed by the Black Caps ahead of next month’s World Cup.

Williamson, the captain of Hyderabad, hit four sixes and five boundaries from the unusual position of No.4, top scoring as the Sunrisers reached 175/7 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The Black Caps skipper has struggled in this year’s edition of the IPL, scoring just 58 runs in seven innings before this drought-breaking.

There was more good news for New Zealand in Hyderabad’s innings with Martin Guptill smashing 30 off 23 balls in just his second innings in this year’s IPL.

Hyderabad’s total wouldn’t be enough with Bangalore chasing it down in the final over to record a four-wicket win.

In the earlier game overnight, Sodhi took three wickets in his second appearance but his haul was in vain as his Rajasthan Royals side slumped to a five-wicket defeat after being bowled out for 115.

Gary Stead said the Black Caps skipper had input but "ultimately" he made the call to take Ish Sodhi over Todd Astle.

The Black Caps open their World Cup campaign on June 1 against Sri Lanka.
