Watch: Mike Hesson fights back tears thanking wife for support – ‘A solo mum for six years'

June 7, 2018

The Black Caps coach is stepping down from his role to spend more time with his family.

Mike Hesson has paid a touching tribute to his wife and children while announcing he's stepping down from his role as Black Caps coach today.

Hesson announced he would be stepping away from the gig after six years to spend more time with his family.

"This job requires 100 per cent commitment and is all consuming," he said.

"I know what's required over the next 12 months, but if I'm honest, I don't feel I have the capacity to give the job what it deserves."

But he was quick to point out there was someone else close to him who had been doing a superb job the past six years - his wife for looking after their two daughters.

"I want to make special mention... to my wife Kate, who has been solo mum for six years and I've got two amazing daughters to show for it.

"I'm certainly looking forward to spending more time with [them]."

Hesson will retire from the head coaching role for the Black Caps on July 31.
