Tom Latham not thinking of toll stellar innings is taking on body - 'Adrenaline is running through me at the moment'

December 18, 2018

Latham could end up being on the field for every minute of the first Test after carrying the bat for an unbeaten 264.

Tom Latham isn't thinking about how sore he could be after the first Test is all wrapped up, despite the possibility he could end up playing every minute of it.

Latham had little time to rest after his superb innings for the Black Caps where he finished up with an undefeated 264 - a total he chipped away at over 694 minutes at the crease.

Instead, he was straight back out on the field helping the Kiwi team for 12 overs, helping set back the Sri Lankans to 3/20 in their second innings.

At day three's end, Latham told media he wasn't thinking about the toll the extended time on the Basin Reserve pitch was taking on his body.

"I'm a little bit tired but the adrenaline is running through me at the moment," he said.

"The best thing is you get a break every two hours so it's important to keep trying to get to certain stages of the game, whether that's lunch or tea."

Latham became the first Kiwi to carry the bat in New Zealand while also earning the highest total by a player to do so, passing Alastair Cook's unbeaten 244 against Australia last year.

The 26-year-old said he hadn't given any thought to the chance of playing in every minute of the first Test.

"I guess looking back in years to come, that might be something to think about but you don't play the game for those sorts of things."

Rather, Latham was looking forward to one thing last night.

"I'll jump in the ice bath now and get a massage later on.

"Hopefully, I'll be ready to go tomorrow."
