Former Black Caps fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan has been handed an Indian Premier League lifeline, returning to his old Mumbai Indians side as an injury replacement for this season's edition of the tournament.

McClenaghan, 31, was unsold during this year's player auction, but with Australia's Jason Behrendorff suffering a season ending injury, the Kiwi will get another chance to impress on the subcontinent.

Since his debut for Mumbai in the 2015 season, McClenaghan has been the side's highest wicket taker, with 54 scalps in 40 innings at an economy rate of 8.61.

McClenaghan has been picked up for his initial auction base price of just under $216,000 - having opted out of a New Zealand Cricket central contract to pursue a career as a freelance T20 specialist.
