Black Caps losing control of second Test as England build huge lead in Christchurch

April 1, 2018

Relive all of the action from the third day's play as the Black Caps face England at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

5:47pm: 66 overs, ENG 202/3 - Root 30*, Malan 19*

Bad light stops play.  The umpires have offered the batsmen the light, and they take it. That should be stumps for the day. England in complete control of this Test match at the moment. New coming through now, that will be stumps on day three.

England lead by 231 runs.

5:40pm: 64.2 overs, ENG 194/3 - Root 25*, Malan 16*

Sodhi comes around the wicket to the left handed Malan, with the ball spinning down the leg side. Watling is confident that Malan's hit it, umpire gives not out and Williamson reviews it.

Nothing on hotspot or snicko, but was it LBW? Pitching outside, impact inline, but the ball's going over the top! Double whammy for New Zealand. NZ lose both reviews.

England lead by 223 runs.

5:16pm: 59 overs, ENG 180/3 - Root 15*, Malan 12*

Malan has avoided a pair, and helped push England's lead past 200. He and Root have so far added 15, looking untroubled late on day three. New Zealand need to take regular wickets if they're to restrict England to a gettable total on days four and five.

England lead by 209 runs.

4:49pm: 52 overs, ENG 165/3 - Root 12*, Malan 0*

WICKET! Boult comes back into the attack and strikes with the last ball of his over! An off-cutter pitches and moves away from Vince, who slashes and gets an edge that Taylor has to dive to take. Vince goes for a well made 76, Dawid Malan - on a king pair - is the new batsman.

England lead by 195 runs.

4:20pm: 46.2 overs, ENG 147/2 - Vince 70*, Root 0*

WICKET! Breakthrough! Southee comes in to Stoneman, who throws the kitchen sink at a wide one. The ball takes the edge, and Watling soars to his left to hang on to a blinder! Stoneman out for 60, Joe Root the new man to the crease.

England lead by 176 runs.

4:10pm: 44 overs, ENG 144/1 - Stoneman 58*, Vince 73*

Stoneman's dropped again! A much tougher chance, off de Grandhomme, top edged towards the slips and Southee can't hang on.

England lead by 173 runs.

3:49pm: 38.1 overs, ENG 124/1 - Stoneman 53*, Vince 55*

Fifty for Stoneman! A dogged half century from the English opener, he gets there with a back cut to the boundary off Southee to reach the mark from 121 balls - and bring up the 100 partnership. A crucial one for the tourists.

England lead by 153 runs.

3:43pm: 37 overs, ENG 119/1 - Stoneman 48*, Vince 55*

Huge appeal from NZ as Southee looks to have strangled Vince down legside! Umpire says no and Williamson refers straight away. Has he hit it? No, it's come off Vince's leg. NZ lose a review.

England lead by 148 runs.

3:30pm: 36 overs, ENG 119/1 - Stoneman 48*, Vince 55*

We're back for the final session of today's play. Kane Williamson leads the Black Caps in a huddle, before Colin de Grandhomme takes the ball. Stoneman to face.

He draws an edge third ball that Stoneman manages to get through the gap between Watling and Taylor - it would have been a regulation catch at slip, but no one was there!

Another edge fifth ball but Taylor's dropped it! Stoneman gets a life on 48, six from the first over after the break.

England lead by 148 runs.

3:13pm: 35 overs, ENG 113/1 - Stoneman 42*, Vince 55*

TEA. England's session. The players head from the field, with the visitors holding a 142 run lead. New Zealand need to seriously regroup if they're to avoid defeat in this Test and win the series.

England lead by 142 runs.

3:05pm: 33 overs, ENG 109/1 - Stoneman 40*, Vince 53*

Fifty for Vince! He drives Sodhi through the covers for a beautiful boundary to bring up the mark. He gets there from 71 balls.

England lead by 138 runs.

2:30pm: 25 overs, ENG 81/1 - Stoneman 30*, Vince 35*

Williamson brings Sodhi into the attack, and straight away he begins to ask questions of Vince, who is lucky to survive a flick round the corner that drops short of Nicholls at leg slip.

England leading by 110 runs.

WICKET! Cook's out. And is that his last test innings, we'll see, he just hung the washing out to Trent Boult and regulation to Watling. Pretty soft stuff that and NZ breakthrough. Vince bangs a four through cover to get underway.

1.20pm: Eng 307; NZ 278; Eng 15-0 (lead by 44)

Boult has noodled one over mid-off for two off Broad. At the other end the English are getting desperate, they've gone for a review off Boult for caught behind down the leg side - he missed it. 11:20am: Eng 307; NZ 239-8 - Watling 85; Southee 50 no, Wagner 1 no (England lead by 68)

Wagner's been hit. Right in the head, Broad right on the money and he's having a moment is Wagner. Now he's getting ice, that really hurt. But he does get right up, and he's going to keep batting. Gets a single from another rib-tickler next ball. Southee gets a single of his own and has 50, his fourth in Tests.

Pre Match - Second Test, day three

Eng 307; NZ 192-6 - Watling 77 no, Southee 13 no

Good morning and welcome to our day three coverage, with the earlier start time today of 10.30am, that's to do with daylight savings kicking in last night.

New Zealand will look for Tim Southee to show a level of self control this morning, not often exhibited, to partner BJ Watling and get New Zealand towards 250 plus.

New Zealand, with only Sodhi, Wagner and Boult to come, will be trying to limit the deficit.

The second new ball is due in just over five overs time.
