That concludes 1 NEWS NOW's live updates of day five of the first Test between the Black Caps and Sri Lanka at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, as rain ends the Test match.

3pm:  Play has been officially been called off by the officials with the first Test ending in a draw.

2:25pm: SL 287/3 - 115.0 overs - Mathews 120, Mendis 141

RAIN DELAY! Rain continues to pour down in Wellington, doesn't look good with the covers remaining firmly on over the pitch as the players and officials wait for the rain to stop.

1:25pm: SL 287/3 - 115.0 overs - Mathews 120, Mendis 141

LUNCH! The umpires signal for an early lunch as it begins to spit. The Sri Lankan batsmen Matthews and Mendis continue their fightback against NZ. They trail the Black Caps by nine runs.

12:50pm: SL 265/3 - Mathews 119, Mendis 120

That's the 250 run partnership for the Sri Lankan duo. Very slow approach to start this morning but that's how they've gone about this partnership so far. Nothing forced, just taking runs as they come. Black Caps have 40min to try and find a crack in the armour before the first break.

12:30pm: SL 260/3 - Mathews 117, Mendis 117

Boult gets things going for NZ on day five! Southee will attack from the other end.

SL trail by 37 runs with seven wickets in hand.

PREVIEW

Rain has delayed things getting underway in Wellington today but there's still a chance for the Black Caps to claim a win with the covers coming off.

The forecast isn't looking great for the afternoon but the Black Caps will take any chance they can get as they pursue a win to keep their chances of reaching second in the world Test rankings.

They need a 2-0 sweep of the series with Sri Lanka to do it and looked set to take the first step entering play yesterday until Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews had their say.

The Sri Lankan pair batted all of day four to claw Sri Lanka back into the contest, leaving them at 259-3 at stumps and trailing the Black Caps first innings total of 578 by 37 runs with seven wickets in hand.

The Black Caps began yesterday's bowling attack with plenty of short deliveries which both Mendis and Mathews seemed comfortable to combat - it remains to be seen if they'll look to do the same today.
