Sri Lanka make inroads as Matthews and Mendis hit centuries, Black Caps fail to find breakthrough on day four

6:06pm: SL 259/3, 102.0 overs - Mathews 117, Mendis 116

The final session is over and the day belongs to Sri Lanka's batsmen Angelo Matthews and Krusal Mendis who both scored centuries to lead the fightback for the visitors. New Zealand tried their best but couldn't find a breakthrough. Sri Lanka trail the Black Caps by 37-runs with NZ.

5:20pm: SL 242/3, 89.0 overs - Mathews 106, Mendis 111

CENTURY! Colin de Grandhomme bowls to Angelo Matthews he clips his delivery through the gap at midwicket and brings up his tenth Test century. Matthews celebrates his milestone with push-ups - A great knock by the Sri Lankan batsman.

4:19pm: SL 206/3, 75.1 overs - Mathews 77, Mendis 104

CENTURY! Neil Wagner bowls to Mendis and he hits to the fine leg boundary and gets a four. That is his sixth Test century and he raises his and embraces the applause from the crowd. Sri Lanka trail NZ by 90-runs.

3:42pm: SL 197/3, 71 overs - Mathews 74, Mendis 98

TEA BREAK! The visitors are not giving up, showing great fight through their batsmen Kusal Mendis and Angelo Matthews. The visitors trail NZ by 99-runs.

FOUR!  Neil Wagner bowls to Angelo Matthews, the delivery is short outside leg and Matthews plays a pull shot to deep backward square for four. The Black Caps are in desperate need of a wicket with Matthews and Mendis leading the fightback for Sri Lanka, Mendis needs two more runs for a century just before the tea break.

150 PARTNERSHIP! Sri Lanka continue to frustrate the   New Zealand side, keeping the score-board ticking over. The visitors trail by 133-runs 

2:36pm: SL 153/3, 53.3 overs - Mathews 50, Mendis 81

FIFTY! Sri Lanka's batsman Angelo Matthews hits it at deep square and he and Mendis sprint for two-runs. And that is the 34th international Test fifty for Angelo Matthews, a superb fifty to get his side back into this Test.

Sri Lanka now trail by 143-runs.

2:15pm: SL 138/3, 50.0 overs - Mathews 42, Mendis 74

The batting partnership of Mendis and Matthews continues to frustrate the Black Caps with the visitors now trailling by 158-runs. Sri Lanka have clawed themselves back into this Test match.

1:43pm: SL 122/3, 41.0 overs - Mathews 35, Mendis 65

Good start from Black Caps spinner Ajaz Patel after lunch, bowling a maiden over to begin the second session on day four of the first Test.

12:49pm: SL 117/3, 36.0 overs - Mathews 32, Mendis 63

Massive over for Sri Lanka and Mathews as he whacks three fours off Wagner! It's gotten to a point where Williamson's hand has almost been forced and he finally brings some spin into the attack. Patel in for de Grandhomme. 11 minutes until lunch here. A breakthrough would really alter the morning which Sri Lanka has owned completely so far.

12:24pm: SL 86/3, 31.0 overs - Mathews 14, Mendis 52

FIFTY! That's 50 for Mendis off 89 balls as he carves away a de Grandhomme ball to backward point for two runs. de Grandhomme is in his third over of work for the morning after taking over for Wagner but it doesn't seem to matter who it is, Mendis has found runs on all of them so far. Mathews happy to play support too. Just over half an hour to until the first break - can the Black Caps find a wicket?

11:54am: SL 66/3, 24.0 overs - Mathews 9, Mendis 43

Southee back into the attack for Boult and he's straight back into work with a maiden against the red-hot Mendis. Mendis has just read this short game the Black Caps have come with this morning and picking up good shots. He's misread a couple but certainly controlled more.

11:39am: SL 54/3, 21.0 overs - Mathews 9, Mendis 32

Fifty for Sri Lanka. Definitely winning the first session so far as Mendis collects the first boundary of the day on the final ball of Wagner's over. Back foot, sweeps the short ball and sends it through square leg. Four runs.

11:25am: SL 38/3, 18.0 overs - Mathews 8, Mendis 17

Quiet start from the Black Caps. Boult and Southee haven't found too much movement and bowling a lot of shorter stuff. Sri Lanka picking up ones and twos when they see them. Wagner already into the attack for Southee.

11:00am: SL 20/3, 12.0 overs - Mathews 2, Mendis 5

We're underway at the Basin! Southee will get things going and be joined by Boult from the other end. Cracker of a day in Wellywood.

The Black Caps are chasing victory in Wellington today after the heroics of Tom Latham guided them to a 296-run lead in the first innings.

Latham's unbeaten 264 was followed up late last night with three crucial wickets to put Sri Lanka at 20-3, still 276 runs behind the Black Caps' first innings total of 578 with seven wickets in hand.

Trent Boult dismissed opener Danushka Gunathilaka lbw for 3, Tim Southee bowled nightwatchman Dhnanjaya de Silva for a duck, and Boult claimed a catch from Southee's bowling to dismiss Dimuth Karunaratne for 10 before stumps.

Latham could end up being on the field for every minute of the first Test after carrying the bat for an unbeaten 264.

It means Sri Lanka are now turning to first innings top scorer Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis to get things back on track when they head to the crease this morning. Mathews is on two and Mendis, five.

Weather in Wellington looks to be another cracker of a day however there's a gusty 43km/h northwesterly blowing across the pitch. It's 22 degrees.
