Black Caps captain Kane Williamson will miss the third and final Test against Bangladesh in Christchurch through injury, meaning a debut for Central Districts batsman Will Young.

Williamson, 28, suffered a minor pectoral tear while fielding during the second Test in Wellington, and did not field as the Black Caps sealed the series with an innings and 12-run victory.

The news means 26-year-old Young comes into the side as a straight replacement for his international debut.

He averages 41.64 from his 69 first class matches.

Elsewhere, BJ Watling has overcome his injury concerns, recovering from a minor hamstring strain that also saw him absent from the final day's play in Wellington. Wellington's Tom Blundell had been drafted in as cover.

Tim Southee will captain the side for the first time in a full Test match, becoming the 30th Black Caps captain in the longest format.

Black Caps (possible) 1. Jeet Raval, 2. Tom Latham, 3. Will Young, 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Henry Nicholls, 6. BJ Watling (wk), 7. Colin de Grandhomme, 8. Todd Astle, 9. Tim Southee (c), 10. Neil Wagner, 11. Trent Boult.
