Jordie Barrett smashes 42 runs off 13 balls during social cricket for pre-Black Clash hit out

The Sons CC veteran David Hutchens had the best seat in the house as Barrett scored 42 off 13 balls.

All Blacks star Jordie Barrett has gotten in a practice run ahead of tomorrow night's Black Clash Twenty20 match in Christchurch - and showed he could be a real threat.

Barrett turned out for The Sons CC in a Last Man Stands (a competitive eight-a-side T20 league) match in Auckland last night and helped them beat Backyard Bowljobs by four wickets after he scored 42 runs off 13 balls.

Captain of The Sons CC, David Hutchens, said Barrett was a "tidy" player.

"He's friends with one of the boys in the team and happened to be in Auckland for whatever reason so he asked if he could come out for a game before the Black Clash," Hutchens told 1 NEWS.

The plan was to let Barrett get a feel for the game by introducing him later in both innings with his bowling and batting to let him get a feel for the match.

When it was his turn, Barrett bowled three overs in the match and collected one wicket for 27 runs as a right-arm medium.

"The figures probably don't show how good he was," Hutchens said.

"He was pretty quick."

The Sons CC were left chasing 178 to win and things were looking troublesome when Barrett came out to bat fourth. The team needed 100 runs off 56 balls.

Cue the fireworks.

Barrett smashed 42 runs off 13 deliveries with multiple sixes in his innings - his strike rate of 323.08 built up by his go-to shot, a slog sweep over cow. He also used the straight drive a couple of times.

Hutchens said he enjoyed watching the action unfold from the non-striker's end.

"I was happy to pick up singles and let him work," he said.

"He has plenty of shots in his repetoire."

Unfortunately, Barrett's innings was cut short when he hit a ball sky-high for an easy catch, but he left the crease with the damage already done having made the chase now 25 runs needed from 25 balls.

The Sons CC reached the target with an over and four wickets to spare and despite Barrett's efforts, he missed out on man of the match.

"He definitely got an honourable mention," Hutchens said.

Barrett will now turn his attention to tomorrow night's Black Clash where he'll play for Team Rugby under coach Sir Graham Henry against some of New Zealand's best cricketers of the past.

The T20 Black Clash will be shown live on TVNZ1 on Friday January 25, at 4pm.
