The Black Caps have reached lunch at 59/1 on the second day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka, still 223 runs behind the tourists at the Basin Reserve.

Resuming their first innings at 275/9, Sri Lanka's last-wicket pair of Niroshan Dickwella and Lahiru Kumara targeted quick runs, before the tourists' first innings was wrapped up for 282.

Tim Southee added to yesterday's five wicket haul by adding Kumara as his final scalp.

The Sri Lankan tail-ender falling to a brilliant catch at leg-slip by Colin de Grandhomme, out for a duck and giving the Black Caps' bowling spearhead figures of 6/68 from 27 overs.

Dickwella finished unbeaten with 80.

In response, the Black Caps' opening pair began brightly, with Jeet Raval and Tom Latham relatively untroubled by the Sri Lankan new ball attack.

The duo brought up their 50-run partnership shortly before lunch, coming from 126 balls - Raval doing the majority of the scoring with 35, Latham adding 14.

The session would end on a high for Sri Lanka though, with Raval caught behind by Dickwella off the bowling of Kumara, out for 43 to send the sides in for lunch.

Latham finished the morning of day two unbeaten with 15, and will be joined by captain Kane Williamson after the break.
