Super Smash final highlights 'big leap forward' for women's cricket, says Wellington skipper

January 21, 2019

Blaze captain Liz Perry spoke to 1 NEWS today about yesterday's win.

Yesterday's Women's Super Smash final shows the strength of the domestic game within New Zealand, according to victorious Wellington Blaze captain Liz Perry.

In a thrilling encounter at Auckland's Eden Park outer oval, the Blaze managed an enthralling last-ball victory over the Canterbury Magicians, in a day of cricket that saw the men's game between the Auckland Aces and Otago Volts play curtain raiser to the women's showpiece event.

Speaking to 1 NEWS this morning, Perry said that yesterday's final merely shows the changing face of the women's domestic game.

"I think it's a big leap forward for the women's game," Perry said.

"I think we've announced ourselves as a game that people want to watch. And I think New Zealand Cricket will take a lot from yesterday's game. With everything that's happening around women's sport in general, I think cricket's certainly putting our hands up in terms of people wanting to watch it, and yesterday's just a huge leap forward for the game in general.

"We're just happy to have been a part of it, really."

The strength of women's cricket will be on show again later this week, when the White Ferns take on India in both ODI and T20 series.
