ICC announce new Test cricket championship and signal four day Test cricket trials to come

October 13, 2017

The new Test cricket championship is set to start in 2019 with the ODI league set to start in 2020.

The International Cricket Council have announced today in Auckland that there will be a new Test championship from 2019 and a new ODI league from 2020.

ICC's chief executive Dave Richardson said the new competitions will create a new buzz and revenue to the longer formats of the game.

"Very pleased to announce that the ICC board meeting which has just concluded gave the green light to the establishment of a nine team Test league and a 13 team ODI league aiming to bringing more context and meaning to bilateral cricket," said Richardson.

"The leagues themselves will start in 2019 after the Cricket World Cup in England – that is the Test league and the ODI league in 2020.

"The reason why there is a slight delay in the ODI league is due to existing arrangements that are in place and contractual arrangements with broadcasters and sponsors of various countries."

Richardson also said four-day Test cricket would be explored on a trial basis.
