Wellington's South African-born batsman Devon Conway's latest mammoth innings is only increasing the excitement over his looming Black Caps availability, says Ross Taylor.
Conway, 28, this morning notched a first-class triple century for Wellington against Canterbury, finishing unbeaten on 327.
Born in South Africa before moving to New Zealand with his partner, Conway has been a standout across all formats for Wellington over the past few seasons, last year named as the men's domestic player of the year.
Despite Conway not being eligible for Black Caps selection until late next year, current Black Cap Taylor is already thoroughly impressed with what he's seen.
"He's got a huge future, I think," Taylor told media.
"The leading domestic player last year. I hadn't seen him bat until we had a few warm up games a couple of weeks ago.
"He looks like a very compact and exciting player. Anyone to get a triple century, regardless of where it is, especially on a green-seamer at the Basin, it all bodes well.
The opener belted 107 not out in a warm up T20 against England.
"September I think he qualifies? So he's not too far away. I'm sure once he does qualify, he'll have a big future in the Black Caps."
Taylor also laughed off any suggestion that Conway's international arrival would coincide with his retirement from the Black Caps.
"Hopefully he's got a few years to wait then."
"There's definitely spots up for grabs, not just my spot, that he can push his way into.
"He bats up the top of the order, he's also opened in different times as well. The strength of the side for the last few years has been competition for places, he definitely adds to the mix in that."
