'He's a compelling proposition' - Black Caps' chief selector raves of speedster Lockie Ferguson

December 6, 2017

The fast bowler is on the fringes of the Black Caps side this summer.

Black Caps fast bowler Lockie Ferguson isn’t far away from breaking into the New Zealand side, chief selector Gavin Larsen says.

Ferguson, 26, made his debut for New Zealand last season in ODIs, while was included in the Black Caps' Test squad to face the West Indies in Wellington last week - missing out on a place in the XI in favour of Matt Henry.

Larsen though, says that he’s been very impressed with Ferguson, one of only a few New Zealand bowlers able to send the ball down at the 150kp/h mark.

"He's bowling very, very quick," Larsen told 1 NEWS.

"He's making the batsmen hop around a bit, which is always nice to see - but most importantly he's in control of most of his deliveries at the moment."

"He's a compelling proposition for us at the moment."

Larsen also said that Ferguson’s rapid rise, along with the Black Caps’ other quicks gives New Zealand a competitive fast bowling unit.

"We're lucky, we've got a nice stable of quick bowlers."

"We've bought Tim (Southee) back - his quality speaks for itself - and along with Trent (Boult) and Wags (Neil Wagner), roll in Matt Henry as well and it's a good set of five bowlers to choose from."

Ferguson will be in contention for his Test match debut, when the Black Caps meet the West Indies in the second match of the series beginning Saturday in Hamilton.
