Flashback: David Warner – hypocrite? Aussie opener slams South Africans for 2016 ball tampering incident

March 27, 2018

Australian vice captain and opening batsman David Warner's harsh words have come back to haunt him, in the wake of the ongoing ball tampering scandal engulfing his side.

On the third day of the third Test match between Australia and South Africa in Cape Town, Australia's Cameron Bancroft was caught trying to manipulate the condition of the ball, before it was revealed that the incident was a ploy from the Australian leadership group - led by Warner and captain Steve Smith.

However, it's since been pointed out that Warner and the Australians had strong condemnation of their own for their opponents, who were accused of the same tactic back in 2016.

South Africa's captain Faf du Plessis was charged with ball tampering during the second Test between the two sides in Hobart, using a breath mint to alter his saliva, helping change the condition of the ball.

Warner's words at the time now leave a very strong scent of irony in the wake of his own actions.

"I just know from an Australian cricket perspective, we hold our heads high," he said at the time.

"I'd be very disappointed if one of our team members did that, and how they're reacting."

"The rules are in place for a reason, if you're not going to use them, then why bother having them?"
