'Every game is a trial' – India series Black Caps' bowlers' World Cup audition

January 12, 2019

There is plenty of competition for places, says paceman Lockie Ferguson.

With the 2019 Cricket World Cup now less than five months away, competition for places in and among the Black Caps bowling group is as strong as it's ever been, according to paceman Lockie Ferguson.

With spearhead Trent Boult rested, and all-rounder Jimmy Neesham injured, the Black Caps still recorded a 35-run win over Sri Lanka in last night's Twenty20 International at Eden Park, with Scott Kuggeleijn making his debut, while Doug Bracewell returned to the side.

And with names such as Adam Milne and Corey Anderson yet to feature this summer, the Black Caps' stocks will undoubtedly be brimming by the time coach Gary Stead chooses his 15-man squad for the tournament.

Speaking to media today though, Ferguson says that the competition is only bringing out the best in the Black Caps' bowling unit.

"Every game you play for New Zealand is a trial, in a way," Ferguson said.

"It's tough at international cricket, and there's a lot of excellent bowlers in New Zealand.

"In later years, we've realised how deep our bowling attack is. Of course every game we're under pressure to perform, but I'm just taking it game by game and enjoying the culture we have with the Black Caps at the moment.

"Going forward into the next game, you just take it game by game, and hopefully we get some more wins."

The Black Caps begin their 2019 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on June 1 at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens.
