The third Test between the Black Caps and Bangladesh has been cancelled following multiple fatalities after shootings at two mosques in Christchurch this afternoon.

Parts of central Christchurch are in lockdown. Eyewitnesses said as many as 15 people may been hit at the mosque, the Masjid Al Noor mosque on Deans Ave. The other mosque where an attack took place was one at Linwood.

Addressing media this evening, New Zealand Cricket confirmed that the Test which was scheduled to begin tomorrow at Hagley Park, has been cancelled.

Speaking to 1 NEWS this afternoon, Bangladesh Cricket spokesperson Jalal Yunus said that the team are still in shock after the events.

"They were about to enter the mosque for prayers and they have seen I believe, by the time the incident is going on inside they have heard the sound of the shootings and they couldn't enter the mosque and from there they all went back to the stadium," they said.

"They're very much shocked, they are very much shocked because they have not seen this kind of - They have never been involved in this kind of situation and they have not seen this kind of you know incidence and to see this kind of thing happening in front of them."

1 NEWS understands that both Bangladesh and the Black Caps are in lockdown as a result of this afternoon's tragedy.
