Black Caps selectors to balance desire to win with workloads in India series

January 22, 2019

Kane Williamson said players stepping in for rested teammates are stepping up regardless.

The Black Caps will select their final XI through their series against India with two things in mind - winning and workloads.

Captain Kane Williamson told media today cricket has evolved to be more than an 11-player game, with squad depth a key to series wins.

"A rotation system isn't the wording, I think, to use, but it is important that there is a balance because of the workload," he said.

"There is so much cricket on so there might be at times a selection that is linked to workload and I think that's just normal in the landscape of international cricket these days.

"A squad now certainly isn't an 11 and you're trying to get everything out of them every day and I do think, on the whole, it helps you become a better cricket team."

Williamson admitted a final XI hasn't been selected for tomorrow's opening ODI at McLean Park in Napier with a final practice and look at the surface still to come.

"Selecting an 11 is always tough and we saw we've had guys rested and guys come in in the previous series and have done really well which are great problems to have.

"They're all adding to the basket."

The Black Caps play India in a five-match ODI series before wrapping things up with three T20s.
