The Black Caps celebrate a wicket against Sri Lanka

The Black Caps will finish 2018 as the third best Test side in world cricket, climbing the rankings after the 1-0 series win over Sri Lanka.

After yesterday's record 423-run victory over Sri Lanka in Christchurch, the Black Caps have leapfrogged South Africa into third, sitting on 107 points on the ICC's current Test rankings.

The series win was the Black Caps' sixth in their past seven series', and fourth consecutive since losing to South Africa in March.

However, New Zealand's march up the rankings could be temporarily halted by South Africa, currently sitting on 106 points, with the Proteas 1-0 up in the best of three series with Pakistan at the moment.

Test rankings: 1. India (116 points), 2. England (108), 3. New Zealand (107), 4. South Africa (106), 5. Australia (102), 6. Sri Lanka (93), 7. Pakistan (92), 8. West Indies (70), 9. Bangladesh (69), 10. Zimbabwe (13).
