Black Caps remaining focused on themselves despite massive challenge of India ahead of them

January 22, 2019

Captain Kane Williamson said the team is focused on improving themselves, not their stellar opposition.

The Black Caps may have the world No.2 ODI side in front of them for a five-match series starting tomorrow, but captain Kane Williamson insists the team's attention is on themselves and not India heading into it.

Both the Black Caps and India are coming off series wins over Sri Lanka and Australia, respectively, when they meet at McLean Park in Napier tomorrow for the curtain-raiser. But the Black Caps admit there's a couple of demons they want to rid themselves of over the next two weeks.

"Our focus is very much about one game at a time," Williamson said.

"A lot of the focus is on our cricket, but you do make subtle adjustments because the opposition is different."

Williamson admitted a series win over India with the World Cup on the horizon would feel great, but he says there's more important things first up.

"There's a lot of cricket in between that thought and where we are now.

"For us, it's more important for us to improve our cricket and our plans that we set out to achieve. We've seen in the last series that we want to get better, certainly in the field, and get back to our old ways."

The first ODI starts at 3pm tomorrow.
